thank you. this should be a sticky.

I have tried searching the forum but cannot come up with a clear answer comparing these apps. I have found snippets like this:

"svBuilder and svBuilder-Pro are desktop applications which allow you to create and edit galleries on your computer before uploading the galleries themselves to your web server (you would need web space with a web hosting company and an FTP program such as Filezilla).
However, Showkase is a PHP web application which must be uploaded to your web server. Showkase uses a web browser interface."

But I really do not understand the 'workflow' of getting an image into one of these apps.
Do they all require a hosting company (with the annual rent that requires)?
Besides space on the web,do they require an infrastructure (wordpress blog, server software, etc)?
Is there a comparison grid somewhere that highlights what each app can do that is not done by the others?

When I look at the demos, they all look alike- image galleries.

I guess the simplest way to explain how these apps are used is an example of how each would be set up. Is there a walk through somewhere? The manual is just a manual explaining all the settings, Is there a 'getting started page' for each?

And what is this 'flickr integration'? Can it pull images from any flickr account? or just your personal flickr account? And why would you do this? To save space on your web server??

Thanks and sorry for the noob questions.
